Lukisan Barong Babi

Judul: Paid Bangkung.

collaboration "RETURN"

“After comparing respective themes in our art, we came to the realization that we are both dream chasers and that our creations were tracks and memories that mirror the ideals and cultural roots of our activities and thoughts.”

Yanik Andita and Rie Mandala
In their joint exhibition “Return” I Wayan Andita (Yanik) of Bali and Rie Mandala of Japan not only share their individual expressions of their respective cultural origins but also join together on a work. It is a collaboration that began in 2001 only to be realized now a decade later. Both clearly express their opinions on the meaning of the theme.

Rie Mandala’s female sensitivity is seen in her joyous and mystical approach to processing memories past, “I work in collage, with clear aims, using old cloth and paper discarded in many lands and of no value to most people.”
The approach in her mixed media work "Alighting" is quite unique. She created circular layers which she cuts one by one, applies calligraphy and stitches colored silk threads on the surface layer. The result is complex and exquisite.
She describes the piece as "returning to the earth as connecting to a higher place. “ The piece took 5 months to complete.

Yanik, who is best known for his love of geometric forms, composed of intricate geometric motifs, patterns suggest batik, calligraphy, creating depth in harmonious fields of color, selects a palette of deep, rich colors that convey the intensity of his feeling as his depicts Balinese cultural roots. This technique enables Yanik to come out with original pieces of art. In his work "Triangle" describes the theme of return as an attempt to break free of the spiral of illusion - “I breathe with difficulty at seeing my feet trapped in old footprints...I return again only to begin again and over and over again”.
Both Yanik and Rie prefer to work on paper which they describe as having an ancient history in many cultures. They write, “Paper demands precision of work. Errors and mistakes are impossible to correct. Paper is honest and working on it requires skill and patience that is comparable to meditation.”
